Chikankari cotton sits light in the hand and slightly open in the weave, which is why it moves air instead of holding it. Lift it to the window and the embroidery shows from the reverse. Wear it at 42 degrees and you understand why Lucknow settled on this cloth generations ago. It creases, and that is part of the deal.

The top is cut short with a notch neckline and 3/4 sleeves, skimming the body rather than gripping it, and ending at the hip. White throughout, embroidery included, spaced along the neckline and down the front panel so the eye has somewhere to rest. Nothing about it is heavy: the whole top weighs less than a cotton dupatta, which matters on a day that runs from office to dinner.

Take it to work under a blazer, over cotton trousers for daily wear, or with a long skirt for a festive lunch. Keep a plain slip beneath it if the light is strong. You can order XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL or 3XL. Hand wash cold, dry in shade, iron from the back so the stitches stay raised. It leaves our Jaipur workroom in packaging that breaks down rather than sitting in landfill.
